University of Massachusetts-Amherst

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst group joined ATLAS in 2004. Our group currently consists of two faculty, one research scientist, two postdoctoral research associates, two graduate students and one undergraduate student.

We are heavily involved in software development for the Muon Spectrometer, which identifies and measures the paths of muons in a magnetic field so that their momenta can be determined with high precision. We are leading several areas: event data modeling, reconstruction, and data quality. Our scientists are interested in searching for physics beyond the Standard Model using measurements of muons and missing energy signatures. We are particularly interested in understanding the impact and improving the performance of muon reconstruction at high energies. Initial work will focus on commissioning the detector and testing the performance of the reconstruction algorithms for physics analysis.
